Summary:

Historical Atlas of Towns from Romania is one of the main projects of the Commission of Towns’ History from Romania. The atlas is divided in three series, corresponding to three major Romanian provinces: A Series – Moldavia, B Series – Walachia and C Series – Transylvania. Up to now we had published six volumes of the atlas, two for each series, about the towns Sighişoara, Suceava, Sebeş, Târgovişte, Câmpulung and Siret. Each volume is composed from two parts: text and maps. The text is divided in short chapters relating to: geographical data, the chronicle of the town, the evolution of the population, aspects concerning urban development and morphology, monuments, especially churches, historical descriptions of the town, archaeological discoveries, a table with street names from different periods and a short bibliography. Also, text illustrations are representative for different types of architecture and town structure at various times.
Most maps have dimensions of 31 × 45 cm or 70 × 90 cm, scales of 1:10000, 1:5000 and 1:2500. Town plans have been redrawn on the computer after the original sources. In general, each volume contains three types of maps and plans: historical maps of geographical area where the town is situated, an old topographical plan of the town, usually from the middle of the nineteenth century or the first half of the twentieth century; this is a basic plan for other several types of maps, such as plotting the town structure, the materials of the buildings, stages of town’s development and street names, the newest topographical town plan. In most cases, in addition to maps, there is a plate with an old picture of the town (an engraving).
The atlas is written in Romanian and German and it is a tool for those who are interested in town’s history, history of architecture and urban history (historians, restorers, architects, urbanists, teachers and students).
